Nicole Kidman wants to make sure her daughter has a “social conscience”. The actress — who raises Sunday Rose with her country music star husband Keith Urban — is currently in Haiti as part of her role as a goodwill ambassador with United Nations.
And Kidman’s hoping her little lady will follow in her famous mother’s footsteps. “It’s not what I get out of it. I feel like I can never put enough into it. The greatest thing my parents did was give me a social conscience,” Nicole said of her work. “For someone like Sunday, for her to be able to be molded, I suppose, to have a very strong social conscience — I would be so proud.”

Even before the massive earthquake left Haiti in ruins this past January, the women of Haiti were already facing extreme gender bias, and violence against women was extremely prevalent in the island nation. According to the United Nations Development Fund for Women’s website, violence against women and girls has been even more widespread since the earthquake, since many are being forced to live in tents and other temporary shelters that leave them even more vulnerable to assault.

The director of UNIFEM, Inés Alberdi, and UNIFEM Goodwill Ambassador Nicole Kidman believe that urgent measures are needed to end this gender-based violence to help rebuild Haiti, and it was this message they took on a trip there in July. In Haiti, Kidman and Alberdi met with female survivors of violence living in a temporary camp, officials from the UN and with members from NGO organizations also working to assist female victims of the earthquake.

One temporary shelter stood out to Kidman. At a shelter for women who had been the victims of sexual assault or were at risk, the actress saw female medical technicians, doctors and leaders providing the victims with the care they needed, legal services, counseling and livelihood training. “This needs to be done on a large scale and they need our support,” Kidman remarked.

The tough economic conditions in Haiti make it even harder for women to protect themselves or obtain resources to improve their lives. UNIFEM reports that the average income of a Haitian male is $1,695 US dollars, whereas the average Haitian female earns $626 US dollars per year. Making women central to the recovery efforts in Haiti will help long-term efforts to end gender-based violence and even out the gender divide that plagues the country.

Actress Nicole Kidman is taking time out of her busy schedule to revisit Haiti assisting with the United nations Development Fund For Women.

The hardships endured by women in Haiti over the years has increased more than 100 fold since the earthquake. For generations, women have functioned as head of the family attempting to provide for the needs of their children by working in agriculture and as vendors making and selling beautifully hand-decorated straw hats, purses and other items mainly marketed to the tourists.

Prior to the earthquake, while conditions were not perfect, these mothers were able to make a living for their families.

Six months after the earthquake, visitors to the island such as Nicole Kidman have seen first-hand, that people in general, especially women, are still living in temporary shelters, some of which are merely walled by sheets stretched between what trees and rock formations were left usable. Women and young girls are left to use public sanitation facilities existing in squalid conditions.

At this point in time, the majority of the population must bathe in public view which heightens the vulnerability of women to sexual abuse. Kidman’s hopes to address the needs of women to the world.

Nicole Kidman is loving home life with her 2-year-old daughter Sunday Rose and husband Keith Urban in Franklin, Tennessee. One of the things she enjoys is growing her own food.

She said: “We just planted our vegetables for the summer and all we have at the moment is lettuce. I’m hoping the corn will be beautiful, because I love eating corn out of the garden.

“And we just bought some alpacas. They are sort of the cousins of llamas, which I’ve always wanted because of their long necks and eyelashes.”

The actress also says she wants Sunday to respect older people.

I find it sad in this day and age that we don’t value our elders the same way we used to. In most cultures they were the ones who had the wisdom and the power, and that’s gotten lost. I’m trying to teach my daughter to have that respect for older people. I’d love to see that come back.”

They then headed to upscale Mexican restaurant El Torito Grill for a late dinner.
While Grammy winner Keith, 42, is renowned for his scruffy jeans and shirt look, Nicole is considered a fashion icon.

But she didn’t quite get it right in her latest ensemble of a long, shapeless lavender shift dress, nondescript white cardigan and white flip flops.

With her hair pulled back in a messy ponytail and carrying what looked like an over-sized baby blue toiletry bag, the look was a far cry from her normal fashionista status.

Earlier today The Toronto International Film Festival announced that it will screen her latest film Rabbit Hole at the event, which opens on September 9 and Nicole will be a guest at the festival.

And in keeping with the couple’s Aussie roots, Keith has reportedly recorded a song with the super successful Australian children’s band The Wiggles.

The song is reportedly a cover of the 1965 Roger Miller tune England Swings (Like a Pendulum Do).

Keith and Nicole who are parents to 2-year-old daughter Sunday Rose told Country Music Television that the collaboration with the band makes sense.

‘Having a 2-year-old, I’m not going to turn down the Wiggles,’ he said.

Also on the list: ‘The King’s Speech,’ about King George VI’s (Colin Firth) battle to overcome his stutter, and Darren Aronofsky’s ‘Black Swan,’ starring Natalie Portman.

‘Black Swan’ will also open the 2010 Venice Film Festival, according to reports.

The pair are said to have sat in a quiet corner at Flyte, an establishment that is a favourite of other celebrities including Shania Twain, Gwyneth Paltrow and Taylor Swift.

‘[Nicole] looked stunning, very understated in a sleeveless dress and sandals,’ People.com reports an observer saying.

‘They were smiling and holding hands across the table. You could tell they were so in love.’

After dining, the couple are said to have spent time talking to the staff, who said the famous duo were ‘a delight’.

Kidman and Ubran wed in Sydney, Australia in 2006, and welcomed daughter Sunday Rose in 2008.

Hemingway & Gellhorn will follow the relationship between writers Hemingway and Martha Gellhorn. Owen, 45, will play the Nobel Prize-winning author and Kidman, 42 will take on Gellhorn, a famed 20th century war correspondent.

Is James Gandolfini returning to HBO?

Their courtship and five-year marriage is one of the most famous in American literature and helped inspire Hemingway’s critically acclaimed 1940 book For Whom the Bell Tolls.

James Gandolfini, who has reportedly been in talks to produce and possibly star in a new series at HBO, will executive-produce the film. Hemingway & Gellhorn was written by Barbara Turner and Jerry Stahl. Philip Kaufman will direct the film, which begins shooting next year.
